The Learning For the Future Series: Working Toward National Standards for School Libraries

In anticipation of the upcoming Treasure Mountain Canada conference the following web conference series has been created to develop and encourage discussion of school library issues.

Register for these as a series, or as individual web conferences. All participants will receive a link to the archived session to share with colleagues or review at a later date.

The Best Elevator Speech Contest ran from January to March 31, with contestants being challenged  to make a convincing statement on the enduring relevance of libraries in the 21st century, in 200 words or less.  Congratulations to our three winners! APLA members can read the winning entries below.

First prize goes to Cate Carlyle of Saint Mary’s University; second prize to Patricia Parsons of Central Division Libraries (Gander, NL); and third to Anita Cannon of Mount Allison University.

Jennifer Richard to Receive the 2012 APLA Merit Award

The Atlantic Provinces Library Association is pleased to announce that this year’s recipient of the APLA Merit Award is Ms. Jennifer Richard, Head of Research Services at Acadia University’s Vaughan Memorial Library in Wolfville, NS.

Thanks to you and a cracker-jack team, we have reached our goal of 30 new members! But there's still time to make a difference. The more new members who join before May 20th, the more we will be able to donate to the very worthy Grow a Library program. For more on the benefits of membership, see below.

After last week's announcement about the federal cuts to jobs and programs at Library and Archives Canada, I noticed many postings to the APLA listserv were sympathetic to the loss of the National Archival Development Program.There is an online petition "Make it Better, Write a Letter"  protesting the cancellation of this funding. We are trying to get 10,000 signatures on a letter to Mr. Harper.  Would you consider adding your name?

APLA is seeking volunteers to tend the APLA/Grow a Library table at the upcoming conference in Wolfville, NS. Duties include providing information and managing cash. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Pamela at pmaher@dal.ca. The following time slots are available:
