Elaine MacLean Is Awarded the APLA Merit Award
2011 Merit Award Recipient Announced
The Atlantic Provinces Library Association (APLA) is pleased to announce that this year’s recipient of the APLA Merit Award is Ms. Elaine MacLean, Librarian at Saint Francis Xavier University (St. FX), Nova Scotia.
The APLA Merit Award is given annually to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to library services in the Atlantic Provinces. This year, APLA has chosen a candidate who embodies leadership and service, as well as passion for the community and for librarianship as a profession.
Colleague Gordon Bertrand, from Grant MacEwan University Library in Alberta, describes Ms. MacLean as “a person of true character, fearless in conviction and deep compassion. A person who isn’t afraid to speak her mind when challenged…and who will, without exception, make time to support those around her.” Ms. MacLean’s “true character” has undoubtedly been the constant force behind her work.
Among her many accomplishments, Ms. MacLean has worked tirelessly for regional and national associations and services. A self-described “association junkie”, Ms. MacLean’s association involvement includes serving as President, Treasurer, and Vice President of APLA and Member at Large of the Canadian Library Association (CLA). She has also been President of the St. Francis Xavier Association of University Teachers, and led the challenging task of negotiating St. FX’s 2nd Collective Agreement. Additionally, in her role with the Novanet Live Help Committee, Ms. MacLean provided leadership in launching an innovative virtual reference service to academic library patrons across Nova Scotia.
Her colleagues at St. FX believe that Ms. MacLean is “our profession at its best." APLA wholeheartedly agrees, and we invite you to celebrate Ms. MacLean with us.
The award will be presented at APLA’s Annual Conference, held in St. John’s, NL, May 16-18, 2011. For more information about the APLA Merit Award including a list of past winners, visit http://www.apla.ca/merit
